Acquaintance Rape Workshops: Their Effectiveness in Changing the Attitudes of First Year College Men

The statistics on acquaintance rape and sexual assault against women are a clear indication that this is a problem that needs to be confronted. An increasing number of articles address the problems that rape survivors face and examine methods mental health professionals can use to assist survivors in dealing with these problems. Articles that address prevention have focused on the survivor rather than the perpetrator. Exclusive emphasis on what women can do to prevent rape, however, supports the attitude that women are responsible for rape. Furthermore, if interventions are designed only for women, they may give women a false sense of security. Unfortunately, however, there is nothing a woman can do to guarantee that she will not be victimized. Certainly, it is important to address the question of how women can protect themselves, but it is also of vital importance to develop interventions in which men are the target. However, those charged with the task of planning prevention programs that target men find that there is no systematic evaluation of the effectiveness of rape awareness programs for men reported in the literature. This research was designed to study the effect of three different types of acquaintance rape prevention programs on the attitudes of first year college men concerning women and sexual assault. The program elements being studied were single sex versus coed workshops, peer facilitated versus professionally facilitated workshops, small group versus large group settings, and lecture versus interactive formats. This research supports the contention that certain features of acquaintance rape prevention programs are more effective than others in changing the attitudes of first year college men about the sexual assault of women.
