Lessons in High Technology
Halligan, Tom
Community College Journal, v80 n1 p26-31 Aug-Sep 2009
This article features Pennsylvania's Montgomery County Community College (MCCC), the nation's number 1 technologically advanced community college, and describes the college's secrets and strategies to success. Although technology underpins much of what MCCC does, the college does not receive the honor--from the Center for Digital Education and "Converge" magazine--simply for its widespread integration of next-generation tools. At MCCC, technology is secondary to a much larger mission: creating learning opportunities for students. One of the pillars of MCCC's strategy is that the college does not separate academic and administrative technologies. Knowing that not all technologies pay dividends, MCCC's leadership encourages its educators to test new approaches before taking them systemwide. Educators are encouraged to experiment with new technology, and if it does not offer anything, they can back off and move in another direction. The college also invests in professional development for employees. One of the most challenging aspects of embracing and implementing a technology-driven culture is proving its return on investment. The college is seeing improved retention as a result of a new student-alert system that tracks attendance. Because many community college students struggle to juggle the challenges of school, work, and family life, MCCC believes anything it can do to ease the burden will boost retention.
