The Leadership Enigma
Wiseman, Rosalind
Principal Leadership, v10 n2 p40-43 Oct 2009
When teachers and administrators talk about leadership with their students and hang leadership banners on the school walls, the assumption is that leadership is grounded on an ethical framework and that leaders will have the strength to go against the tide of popular opinion. The author argues that such an assumption is a mistake. In this article, the author talks about leadership and how leadership is defined by students. The author stresses that if teachers and administrators do not find a way to engage the voices of students, make them feel heard, and help them to see what ethical leadership looks like, the potential for powerful, quiet leadership within a school is lost, and more-negative leadership will define the school culture. The author offers tips on how to start a conversation with students about ethical leadership.
