Not Just Preaching to the Choir: Communication Scholarship Does Make a Difference
Hummert, Mary Lee
Journal of Applied Communication Research, v37 n2 p215-224 May 2009
Has research by communication scholars made a difference in the practices or outcomes of communication in society? The author's answer to this question is based on her belief that there are three distinct ways in which communication research has made a difference, not all of which fit the traditional definitions of translational research. To illustrate, she highlights the work of several interpersonal and health communication scholars. Although she firmly believes that communication research has made a difference, she also believes that communication scholars can--and must--do more. Towards that end, the author reviews the characteristics shared by the research programs discussed that can guide others committed to ensuring that their research insights make a difference to practice, concluding with some thoughts on the responsibilities of communication scholars.
