Navigating Everyday Literacies: Mapping as Deep Frame in Teaching Argument

Much has been written by academics lamenting the lack of preparedness of students for entrance to the university (and, by employers, lamenting the additional training that students need after college to enter the workforce). Although such lamentations may be merited, students pick up the binary rhetoric of real world versus academic world that portrays them as "clueless in academe." That students might be "clueless" is truly paradoxical, considering that all people know about writing is really in the body before it is in the mind. It is "picked up" unconsciously through normal development. Imitative processes teach not only physical movement but the abstract "moves" that structure intellectual argument. It is this latent knowledge that "mapping as deep frame in teaching argument"--the focus of this essay--draws on. In structuring the teaching of argument using map literacy, the authors show students how all that they know of direction, movement, and position in everyday activities--such as traveling somewhere--can help them think about the elements of argument. Through map literacy, students can learn how to integrate their understanding of reading and writing, steps in the research process, and various knowledge bases. In this essay, the authors develop the narrative of arriving at their method through their experience with other approaches to teaching composition; explain the entailments of the deep frame underlying their method; outline how to teach argument using map literacy, supplementing this discussion with student samples; answer some potential objections to using map literacy in teaching argument; and provide reflections on their experiences.
