Using "Moodle[TM]": How Rural School Librarians Stay Connected

So, what if one lives in a remote, rural area, but still has important knowledge and insights that others might benefit from learning? What if one is the only school librarian for multiple districts, and one just cannot justify the time to travel to a regular, traditional class meeting These are questions that school librarians in Iowa, as well as elsewhere, have asked time and again. Four school librarians in Iowa, however, found a solution. Through the course of the last several months, a group of nearly sixty Iowa school librarians have explored one answer to these questions through a state-wide course entitled "Developing Your School Library Curriculum for the 21st Century." The class was a combination of face-to-face experiences, distance learning via a statewide fiber optic network, all held together by the structure offered by "Moodle[TM]," a Web-based, open source class management application. While there can be a considerable amount of discussion focusing on the technical aspects of using "Moodle[TM]," the focus of this article is on the practical application for distance learning.
