The New AASL Program Guidelines for School Library Programs

In this article, the author provides an overview of and her reflections on the new American Association of School Librarians (AASL) program guidelines, "Empowering Learners: Guidelines for School Library Media Programs" (2009). At just sixty-four pages, this publication is easy to browse and ready for investigation. As to be expected from librarians, it is well-indexed, documented with a strong bibliography and several appendices, full of text boxes for "at-a-glance" reading, and complete with a Table of Contents for quick reference. The new guidelines begin with the mission and vision and have successive chapters on teaching and learning, the learning environment, and leadership. Nothing has been taken away from previously defined roles of teacher, instructional partner, informational specialist, and administrator that defined the school librarian as learning and teaching collaborator, advocate for reading and inquiry, and provider of equitable access to resources and materials for all learners. Each chapter includes several "Delve Deeper" lists that accompany topics addressed, serving as a mini-bibliography right at hand.
