An Innovator and Lifelong Friend
Davis, Glen A.
NCSSSMST Journal, v14 n1 p24-25 Fall 2008
In this article, the author, a pediatrician, reflects upon his formal education and describes how being educated at the Kalamazoo Area Mathematics and Science Center (KAMSC) during his high school years provided him with the best educational experience. Unlike the typical high school, KAMSC provided an environment that was the perfect fit for him as an inquisitive, yet insecure teen. The teachers were always full of enthusiasm and willing to answer extra questions during class. Any question that had not been answered fully in class typically spawned a mini after-class seminar, with several students surrounding a teacher for an invaluable exchange of ideas. KAMSC also taught him how to use the latest technology to help solve problems. The author salutes KAMSC and thanks her. She has nurtured him and watched him grow, as his experiences have taught him to respect and honor the quest for knowledge. At a time when the country's ability to effectively provide math and science education has been questioned, KAMSC has served as a veritable beacon of hope where many bright and dedicated students continue to explore, learn, and share ideas.
