Your IRB: Educating Students, Monitoring Student Research, and Safeguarding Students as Research Subjects
Scheppler, Judy; Kolar, Christopher
NCSSSMST Journal, v13 n2 p19-28 Spr 2008
This article informs about the formation of a school's Institutional Review Board (IRB), presents examples of research that IRBs often encounter, elevates awareness of human subjects research concerns for faculty and staff, and discusses how emerging requirements for science competitions may affect schools, staff and students. An IRB is the group charged with the protection of human subjects that are part of research endeavors. Throughout history, there have been multiple and egregious atrocities visited by individuals on others ostensibly in the name of research. One needs only to think of Auschwitz, the Tuskegee syphilis study, and Stanley Milgram's obedience studies to elicit feelings and visions of the gross abuse of humans. While people probably feel that such abuses are at an end, it has only been through national and international mandates--in the not-too-distant past--that the Federal system of laws and practices has been put into place to ensure that human subjects are treated in an ethical manner. Abuse and unethical treatment of human subjects still occur, although infrequently. In this article, the authors raise these issues specifically as they apply to non-biomedical research, the type of research that one is most likely to encounter at the secondary school educational environment.
