Creating the Teaching Professor: Guiding Graduate Students to Become Effective Teachers

This paper describes the practices and outcomes of a pilot graduate student seminar on teaching and learning within the History Department at the University of Texas at El Paso. It documents results by considering the careers of three accomplished PhD students, who learned classroom techniques over different periods of time through personal inquiry, formal training, and by teaching at different levels. Their progress in the History Teaching and Learning Seminar is measured against the documented experiences of thirty other graduate students in three different iterations of the teaching and learning seminar from 2001 to 2004.
