Using Instant Messaging for Collaborative Learning: A Case Study

As recent second language acquisition (SLA) studies have shown, the negotiation of linguistic items such as vocabulary, verb tenses, and grammar rules with different types of interlocutors--native speakers (NSs) and advanced non-native speakers (NNSs) of English--seems to facilitate second language development among students. Findings from investigations into how learners' attention is drawn to linguistic elements, also known as focus-on-form SLA studies, indicate that negative corrective feedback appears to encourage learner awareness of linguistic input provided by teachers or more advanced learners and often leads to successful learning experiences. This research has been successfully extended to computer-mediated contexts (CMCs). Susana Sotillo examines the provision of corrective feedback to English as a Second Language (ESL) learners by tutors who are native speakers or non-native speakers in the targeted language. Sotillo addresses five research questions in this study: the availability of error correction in instant messaging sessions, relative rates of corrective feedback by NS tutors versus NNS tutors, types of feedback, types of errors, and types of learner responses to feedback. The results show that error corrections were made in this CMC primarily through text-based messaging; that more indirect corrective feedback, focusing primarily on grammatical, lexical, and spelling errors, was provided to ESL learners; that NNS tutors were more likely than NS tutors to provide explicit corrective feedback to their students; and that immediate response to errors produced by learners is helpful because it appears to facilitate the successful incorporation of corrective feedback.
