Enabling Robert to Learn like Susan: The Use of Lectures in Undergraduate Teaching of Social Policy

Despite criticisms in the literature on pedagogy, lecturing continues to be the dominant teaching method on most undergraduate programmes. Drawing on research examining teaching practice in undergraduate Social Policy programmes, accounts of approaches to lecturing are discussed in the context of the arguments in the literature for more active forms of learning. The paper includes material on the value of interactive lectures drawn from a staff seminar at Bristol University and addresses lecturers' anxieties about student participation in lectures. An appendix provides examples of interactive exercises which can be used in lectures for Social Policy undergraduates.
