PEB Exchange, Article 15 Oct 2005
The OECD Programme on Educational Building, together with the Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers (APPA) and the OECD Programme on Institutional Management in Higher Education, organised an international conference on the planning, design and management of facilities for higher education institutions on April 24-27, 2005. The purpose of the OECD/APPA conference was to discuss new ideas about campus architecture and to examine important trends and issues that could influence the planning, design and management of higher education institutions. The event concentrated on innovative institutions that respond to current needs in various countries and attempted to define some of the basic concepts that will affect future learning environments. Developed in this feature article is a selection of the ideas and case studies presented at the conference on "Planning, Designing and Managing Higher Education Institutions," in San Jose, California (United States): (1) Megatrends and Myths: Facilities Management Practices in Higher Education (William A. Daigneau); (2) The Technology-Enabled Learning Space (Mark S. Valenti); (3) Natural Hazard Risk Mitigation in Higher Education Infrastructure (Sylvana Ricciarini and Stephen O. Bender with the assistance of Nicole Alleyne); (3) Montreal's Concordia University: Building a Modern Campus (Michael Di Grappa, Justin Kingsley, and Jonathan Goldbloom); (4) E-strategies: ICT at Spanish Universities (Josep M. Duart and Francisco Lupianez); (5) Libraries and information services units in the State of Veracruz (Miguel Angel Ehrenzweig Sanchez). (Individual case studies contain notes and figures.)
