In recent years the number of children, ages 3 to 5, in early childhood programs has rapidly grown. As a result, an emphasis has been placed on developing curriculum guidelines that specifically address the needs of young children. One of these guidelines recommends that children be provided with an opportunity to participate in regular movement activities. Unfortunately, classroom teachers receive little training in movement and members of the dance community receive little training in child development. When I was asked to teach a class of preschoolers, I first hesitated, but discovered later that I was being offered an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of dance by exploring movement with young children. As a result of my experience, I have formed a developmentally appropriate approach to teaching dance to young children that reflects my training and personal dance philosophy.
