Making the Transition from a Private Studio to a Bachelor of Fine Arts Program
Dietzel, Rebecca
Journal of Dance Education, v5 n3 p103-104 2005
Based on the author's experience as a teacher in a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program, the author offers some ideas to ease the transition from the private studio to a BFA professional preparatory program. As a teacher in the Ailey School and Fordham University BFA program, the author has seen many students work their way through this challenging curriculum. Working with the freshmen has given the author an appreciation for the unique character of each individual student. It has also served to reveal some patterns that offer insight into why some students complete the BFA program while others move on to pursue other ventures. In this article, the author shares insights and offers some guidelines for helping students choose their academic paths. The author also offers some suggestions for guiding high school seniors who are considering applying to a BFA program, or who have already been accepted into one, to help them to succeed both in and out of the studio as they move on to higher education.
