The Hard and the Soft
Cassidy, Michael; Medsker, Karen
Performance Improvement Quarterly, v17 n3 p3-4 Sep 2004
Recently, one of these authors was asked to facilitate a meeting of about a dozen Native Americans, all present and past employees of a large Federal agency, and members of a Native American affinity group. A Native American colleague and others from the group informed the author in preparatory session that the group would employ a "talking circle." The particulars of this and a planned "smudging" ceremony were described in general terms. What became very clear, very quickly, was that these ceremonies were held as sacred by the group. The talking circle and smudging might be candidates for formal inquiry pertaining to performance improvement, but the author suspects that any scientific methodology would be anathema to the process, a union of the sacred and the profane doomed to failure from the outset.
