Katrina Kids! Helping Kids Exposed to Population-Wide Trauma
Bender, William N.; Sims, Rebecca
TEACHING Exceptional Children, v40 n1 p40-47 Sep-Oct 2007
Although schools have implemented school safety plans as a result of the violence witnessed on rare occasions in schools today, schools are less likely to be prepared for emergencies such as Katrina or 9/11; this is true even for schools in locations prone to hurricanes, tornadoes, or earthquakes. Whereas disaster plans typically involve school evacuation and so forth, many school safety plans do not include sufficient detail on dealing with the emotional trauma resulting from population-wide trauma (PWT) events. In this article, the authors discuss the difference between PWT and the more common types of trauma and provide guidelines for teachers and parents in dealing with PWT. (Contains 2 tables.)
