Geometry Software as a Catalyst for Change in Secondary Education

Powerful geometric software has been available to education for around 20 years but has not had the impact on teaching and learning of mathematics, science and technology that might have been expected. This is in contrast to the widespread adoption of software tools in the world outside education which use geometric algorithms to produce visual images. Most nations, and educators, would wish to engage secondary school students more with subjects which are important to their national economies, and to equip them more with the skills they may need after school. Existing geometry software already has many of the facilities needed to address this. This paper provides a wide range of very practical examples of how such software can be used to bring the real world inside the secondary school classroom and to engage students in applying their learning in contexts which have meaning in their own experience and environment. Thus within the existing curriculum, and using existing information technology (IT) tools, we have the means to support innovative teaching and learning approaches which should help align more closely classroom practice with the needs of the world outside education.
