Learning Centered Universities: The Changing Face of Higher Education
Scott, Whitney; Lisagor, Terri; Marachi, Roxana
Journal of Faculty Development, v23 n1 p14-23 Jan 2009
Universities across the United States are beginning to systematically implement a paradigm shift in the way faculty are expected to teach and how students learn. Moving away from viewing the traditional role of the teacher as one whose primary job is to deliver lessons ("fill the pail" of students' brains), many college campuses are recognizing the value of a more Learning Centered approach to education. The current study investigated faculty perceptions (N = 66) of higher education's shift to Learning Centered instruction. Results indicate that most of the surveyed faculty have already adopted principles of a Learning Centered philosophy, are willing to change their practices, and suggested specific classroom strategies. Some faculty perceived barriers to implementing a Learning Centered approach, yet solutions are discussed. The results have implications for higher educational institutions that prepare individuals to become faculty. (Contains 5 tables.)
