Online Student Support Services
Smith, Burck
Community College Journal, v76 n2 p26-29 Oct-Nov 2005
Community colleges serve a population of students that is more varied than any other segment of higher education. Commuter, adult, distance education, returning, part-time, working and transfer students have academic support needs that are varied and decentralized. However, frequently these students do not receive or cannot access the support services that are available to their peers in residential education. This article discusses the need for Web-based student support services. To provide a successful online student support service, a college must accomplish three key objectives: (1) It must identify the needs of its online and face-to-face learners; (2) It must make services available when the learner wants them, rather than when the school is comfortable providing them; and (3) It must provide online services that are as good or better than face-to-face equivalents.
