Sustainability, Internationalization, and Higher Education
Wright, Tarah S. A.
New Directions for Teaching and Learning, n118 p105-115 Sum 2009
In this article, the author explores internationalization efforts through the lens of global sustainability and examines the role of universities in educating for sustainable development through their research, their teaching (and pedagogies), and by acting as models in their own physical operations. Rather than suggesting that sustainability should be promoted through specialized courses or programs, the author advocates an integrated approach where sustainability is considered across the disciplines. She concludes that in order for higher education to truly address sustainability problems and educate the citizenry to move toward sustainability, a fundamental re-thinking of the purpose of the university and how educators teach is needed.
