Connections, Partnerships, Opportunities, and Programs to Enhance Success for Military Students
Ford, Deborah; Northrup, Pamela; Wiley, Lusharon
New Directions for Student Services, n126 p61-69 Sum 2009
Active-duty personnel, reservists, veterans, and their spouses or dependents represent 30% of the 10,000 students at the University of West Florida (UWF). With base realignment activities, a rise in the number of troops returning from deployments, and an increase in military-affiliated students on campus, the needs of veterans and their families have become a top priority at UWF, as is the case at many colleges and universities. Located in Pensacola, UWF is a regional comprehensive university in a community surrounded by military installations, including Pensacola Naval Air Station, Eglin Air Force Base, and Hurlburt Field. Administrators at the university, including those from student services and academic affairs, value partnerships with the military units in the region and work collaboratively with base leaders to provide learning opportunities for future generations of service personnel. UWF leaders place priority on developing programs and services to meet the diverse educational needs of students serving in the military. This chapter describes how initiatives developed at the University of West Florida provide services for students who are on active duty around the world, as well as those stationed at bases in the region. Descriptions of programs and recommendations are also presented.
