Caretaking in a Nurturing Way: Replicating Relationship-Based, Reflective Models in Healthy Families Programs
Campbell, Sally
Zero to Three (J), v25 n5 p17-22 May 2005
Healthy Families America is a national, voluntary, home visiting program model designed to help expectant and new parents get their children off to a safe and healthy start. Since 1992, it has been successfully replicated in over 440 communities in the U.S. and Canada. This article describes the program's reflective, relationship-based model and how it has been successfully replicated. Twelve research-based "critical elements" define what a Healthy Families program is. Critical elements are grouped into three categories: service initiation, service content, and staff characteristics. New programs go through a credentialing program that is based on the twelve critical elements within 2 years of inception, and then every 4 years thereafter.
