Creating Professional Learning Communities in a Traditional Educational Leadership Preparation Program
Doolittle, Gini; Stanwood, H. Mark; Simmerman, Herb
Educational Considerations, v33 n2 p10-16 Spr 2006
In this article, the authors examine the prerequisites for leadership preparation programs with regard to implementing and institutionalizing professional learning communities as an instructional strategy. First, the authors posit that as faculty they must examine and reflect on their own teaching practices and how they influence their reciprocal relationships with students. Second, the authors argue that capacity for individual and collective student voice must be developed, invited, and applauded in preparation programs. Finally, the authors suggest that students' newly mastered competencies must be institutionalized as part of an ongoing and systematic analysis of their teaching practices. (Contains 41 endnotes.)
