Top 10 Strategies for Bolstering Students' Mental Resilience
Thomas, Sally Spencer
Chronicle of Higher Education, v55 n36 pA26 May 2009
As a faculty adviser at Regis University, the author has seen countless students who feel under stress and wonder if they are up for the challenge of college life. That stress has only been compounded by the financial difficulties that many more students and their families are now facing. But the good news is that individuals who work on campuses can encourage mental resilience among students, even--perhaps especially--during these tough economic times, if they: (1) Scan the environment; (2) Serve as models of emotional intelligence and mental wellness; (3) Normalize and integrate mental health; (4) Offer easy access to an array of services; (5) Foster multiple identities; (6) Train students in life skills; (7) Engage student leaders in mental-health advocacy; (8) Explore the wisdom of the crucible; (9) Increase a sense of belonging; and (10) Help students in their search for meaning.
