Forced Separations and Forced Reunions in the Foster Care System
Lillas, Constance M.; Langer, Lester; Drinane, Monica
Zero to Three (J), v25 n6 p34-40 Jul 2005
The juvenile court system has undergone tremendous changes over the past century, but much still needs to change in order to fully meet the complex needs of very young children. This article examines the challenges that the juvenile court system faces in preserving and supporting continuity of children's care in physically safe and emotionally enabling environments. Drawing on the unique perspectives of an attorney-advocate (for the child), an infant mental health specialist, and a judge, the authors use case material to illustrate how children's best interests can best be served through an interdisciplinary approach.
