National Labor Market Projections for Community College Students
Sommers, Dixie
New Directions for Community Colleges, n146 p33-52 Sum 2009
This chapter examines the job outlook for occupations where the most important path to entry is through programs typically found at the community college: an associate degree or postsecondary training but less than a degree. The discussion draws on labor market projections from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the federal agency charged with projecting longterm future labor market demand for the U.S. economy. Every two years, BLS issues ten-year projections of occupational employment and openings. Projected openings include new jobs created by economic growth and the changing structure of the economy, and openings to replace existing workers who leave their occupations for a variety of reasons, including retirement. To examine the community college labor market, the author makes use of two education and training categories, associate degree and postsecondary vocational award, which the author refers to collectively as "community college occupations."
