The Economics of Community College Labor Markets: A Primer
Kasper, Hirschel
New Directions for Community Colleges, n146 p3-10 Sum 2009
The community college has many roles and constituents: academic, professional, and vocational. Its curriculum may be distinguished from that of other institutions of higher education by its many courses designed to enhance students' immediate career opportunities, especially with nearby employers. This article focuses on the job markets for community college students and the basics of labor market economics: the availability of jobs and the wages and salaries for those jobs, with attention to the elementary forces of supply and demand. It provides some basic economic tools to help describe how labor markets work to enable employers and community college students to reach each other to secure productive jobs.
