New Definitions for New Higher Education Institutions
Meyer, Katrina A.
New Directions for Higher Education, n146 p11-15 Sum 2009
New terms were exploding early in the development of distance learning and virtual universities. Distance learning, online learning, e-learning, and distributed learning were applied to the various new forms of learning using online or Web-based materials and processes. However, largely thanks to the immediate popularity of the Western Governors' use of "virtual university," the term was applied to a variety of organizational types that were very different from one another. This was (and still is) confusing to many both within and outside academe, and it led to a rash of misunderstandings about what "virtual" meant and what a virtual university might do. In this article, the author provides new definitions or descriptors for different types of virtual universities that have been proposed by several authors.
