Some Reflections on the Study of Children with Specific Language Impairment

In this article, the author presents some reflections on the study of children with specific language impairment (SLI). He acknowledges the heterogeneity found in the many individuals who meet criteria for the label of SLI. The genetics of SLI attracts much research interest, particularly into the causes and characteristics of SLI and the identification of overlaps between the diagnostic labels of autism spectrum disorders (ASD), dyslexia and SLI. The author discusses how this research can aid one's understanding of SLI, but more importantly emphasizes the need for research that will tackle the challenge of understanding how to design and deliver interventions to minimize the language difficulties that these individuals experience.
