"Hard Science" for Gifted 1st Graders
DeGennaro, April
Understanding Our Gifted, v19 n1 p21-22 Fall 2006
"Hard Science" is designed to teach 1st grade gifted students accurate and high level science concepts. It is based upon their experience of the world and attempts to build a foundation for continued love and enjoyment of science. "Hard Science" provides field experiences and opportunities for hands-on discovery working beside experts in the field whenever possible. The unit begins with the difference between living and non-living things and then introduces the scientific classification system of dividing all living things into six kingdoms based upon their characteristic properties. "Hard Science" gives accurate information that may be difficult initially, but when given time to explore, question, and apply concepts, students can understand and extend their learning into areas of interest. The secret of the success of "Hard Science" is that we treat children as scientists and respect their intellect.
