Diplomas Count 2009. Broader Horizons: The Challenge of College Readiness for All Students
Education Week, v28 n34 Jun 2009
President Obama is the most prominent of a growing number of American policymakers to embrace the idea that some form of postsecondary education is crucial to students' success after high school. This year's edition of "Diplomas Count", a report by "Education Week" and the Editorial Projects in Education Research Center, examines that idea. As this report points out, what it means to be ready to attend college is open to argument, with no firm consensus on how to measure college readiness or ensure that all students clear such a bar. This special issue of "Education Week" includes the following articles: (1) Beyond a Focus on Graduation (Catherine Gewertz); (2) Building a Culture Aimed at College (Catherine Gewertz); (3) "College for All" Is Making Me a Bit Nervous (Mel J. Riddile); (4) Florida Schools Steer by Numbers (Dakarai I. Aarons); (5) Leadership Key to Creating Data Systems (Edward G. Rendell); (6) Enthusiasm Builds for Data Systems (Dakarai I. Aarons); (7) NCLB Rules Back Common Rate (Catherine Gewertz); (8) Smart, Bold Reform for Powerful Schools (Michele Cahill); (9) Gauging Graduation, Pinpointing Progress (Christopher B. Swanson); (10) Consensus on Meaning of "Readiness" Remains Elusive (Sterling C. Lloyd); (11) State of the States (Rebecca Wittenstein); and (12) Sources and Notes: (A) Graduation Policies, Class of 2009; and (B) How Does the EPE Research Center Calculate Graduation Rates? Individual articles contain tables and figures.
