Quality Technology in the Language Classroom: The Views of Graduating Teachers
Yule, Dawne
Babel, v41 n1 p20-27, 38 Jul 2006
Information communication technology (ICT) outcomes have been incorporated into the current New South Wales (NSW) Teaching Standards document which informs all NSW teachers of the standards they are expected to meet in their schools. In order to qualify to teach and to meet these standards as graduates, preservice teachers must demonstrate a range of knowledge, skills, and values outcomes, including: (1) knowledge of varied approaches to learning and of their students' skills and interests (professional knowledge, element 1); (2) the use of a wide and appropriate range of resources (professional practice, element 3); and (3) effective use of ICT to support learning (professional practice, element 4). This article presents a research report on a study of beginning teachers' use of ICT in the language classroom. All preservice teacher informants had been given the opportunity to teach using ICT in schools. Research questions guiding the study were firstly, whether preservice teachers had met any obstacles to teaching with ICT, and secondly, whether classes were focused and engaged during ICT-based lessons. A final question focused on whether the use of ICT provides easier access to linguistically and culturally authentic materials.
