A Survey of Preservice Education for Language Teachers
Tognini, Rita
Babel, v40 n3 p31-38 Feb 2006
This study reports on the findings of a survey of preservice education provided for language teachers at a number of universities across Australia. The survey was undertaken as part of the development of Standards for Teachers of Indonesian Project, carried out by the AFMLTA and the Department of Education, Science, and Training. The survey examined course offerings at a selected number of universities in each State and Territory across Australia, in order to gain an idea of what seemed to be typical in the current preparation of language teachers and to identify any key themes and trends. Data were collected through documentation available in the public domain, i.e. information available on university web sites such as course descriptions and handbooks. In some instances, personnel responsible for organising and teaching particular courses were contacted by telephone or e-mail for clarification of detail or further information. Twenty universities were surveyed and at least one institution from each State and Territory was included in the survey. Information was collected about: (1) the education degree(s) for prospective language teachers; (2) the language(s) offered (either as part of the teacher education degree and/or another degree); (3) general and language-specific prerequisites for admission to these particular award(s); and (4) the language teaching curriculum units (including the school experience or practicum component) required to qualify as a language teacher.
