Discovering Collaborative e-Learning through an Online Writing Course
Guth, Sarah
Innovate: Journal of Online Education, v3 n2 Dec 2006-Jan 2007
In this article Sarah Guth describes an online course for writing research articles in English she developed for engineering students at the University of Padua in Italy. Designed to overcome time-space constraints as well as to provide both linguistic and discipline-specific feedback, the course integrated peer editing as a key component of instruction. Guth asserts that peer revision creates democratic spaces where students perform for one another rather than just for their instructor, leading to increased learner autonomy over the writing process. The structure of the course also allows students to focus on broader issues such as academic writing conventions, organizational clarity, and argumentation as well as specific issues of English usage. Moreover, as the course requires students to collaborate as colleagues and learners, it reinforces professional skills that will be useful to them as PhD students and future academics. While an online writing course entails a range of challenges--the reconfiguration of student-teacher roles, the difficulties involved with the social aspects of online learning, and the lack of oral communication--Guth's experience demonstrates that the benefits of collaborative e-learning outweigh its challenges.
