Making a Difference: Our Story of Mission Outreach in the Philippines
Mariani Gomes, Joan J.; Richmond, Jerry C.
Montessori Life: A Publication of the American Montessori Society, v21 n2 p36-41 2009
At the heart of Maria Montessori's philosophy is the idea of providing the child with the most supportive environment in which to develop one's potential, for the singular purpose of carrying out one's cosmic task. Montessori teachers everywhere dedicate their energies to participating in this endeavor. But do these same teachers take time to realize that they, too, are on the same journey, developing their own potential and discovering the ways they choose to carry out their cosmic task? It is one thing to believe in the cosmic task; it is another to feel the pull and then experience the fact that there is so much more they each can do. "Education should no longer be mostly imparting of knowledge, but must take a new path, seeking the release of human potentialities" (Montessori, 1974, p. 2). In this article, the authors share their story of mission outreach in the Philippines. Their work was inspired by Sister Christina Marie Trudeau and her mission education program at Chaminade University of Honolulu. This is the story of how the authors found themselves on an unexpected mission, experiencing the life-changing effects of making a difference, realizing a commitment to service, and investing in the cosmic task.
