Cinderella Takes Action: A Local Initiative to Promote Languages

Languages are education's Cinderella, but few language educators expect a fairy-godmother to appear with a quick fix. In this article, the author explains that long term and sustained efforts are required to make languages other than English an integral and natural part of the education and everyday life of all Australians, and the "Canberra Region Languages Forum" is an attempt to do exactly that. The "Canberra Region Languages Forum" was formed to try to bring together all the many stakeholders in Canberra and the surrounding region who are interested in promoting languages and language learning. The major goal was to share information and ideas to see how forum participants could build on local resources and strengths to improve languages education in the ACT region. This article presents a brief overview of the forum and discusses some of the outcomes of forum activities and how these have intersected with various developments in language learning and teaching in the ACT region in 2007 and 2008.
