Singapore Math: Challenging and Relevant Curriculum for the Gifted Learner

Teachers know their students must struggle and grapple with authentic tasks in order to grow stronger. Classroom teachers of the gifted know that their students cannot advance cognitively without facing relevant and challenging material that demands higher level thinking and reasoning. Therefore, the teacher of gifted mathematics students must present them with a challenging environment. Appropriate problems, tasks, and activities must be provided either through the curriculum or through the garnering of outside resources. Students, even very able ones, often need initial support, modeling, and guidance. For many bright elementary math students, unfamiliar or difficult material is new territory. The Union County Public Schools in North Carolina recognized the need to provide gifted math students with a deeper and more challenging mathematics program and adopted the Singapore Primary Math series ( as the gifted curriculum. The quest that culminated in this decision was not motivated by the need or desire to improve mathematics test scores. On the contrary, most gifted students were already meeting or exceeding growth on the North Carolina End of Grade (EOG) Mathematics Test. By abandoning previous textbooks which had yielded high test scores in favor of a seemingly radical, new approach to mathematics from halfway around the world, the authors wondered if students' EOG scores would drop. It was a risk taking venture. In this article, the authors show how this program shapes students into mathematical thinkers and problem solvers. Looking back at the first year of implementation, it was evident from the start that the philosophy and methodology of the Singapore Primary Math series is well designed, innovative, challenging, and culminates in a relevant mathematics program for the gifted learner. Concrete activities with manipulatives, followed by a pictorial component in the textbook, provide scaffolding for the abstract problems to follow.
