The Role of Ethnicity and Grade Level on the Motivational Orientation in Urban African American Middle School Students

This study's purpose was to pair motivational orientation and ethnicity in a sample of urban African American middle school students (n = 213). Through multivariate analyses, the results revealed differences in motivational orientation between eighth graders when compared to their younger peers. The study supports the hypotheses of: a) the flexibility of motivational orientation; b) the declining interests and increased self-evaluation and satisfaction in students, and; c) the impact of ethnic pride on students' motivation. Implications of the findings and recommendations for future research are discussed. (Contains 2 tables.)
