Creating Connections
Ellison, Ann
Exceptional Parent, v39 n4 p22-23, 25 Apr 2009
In this article, the author talks about the Connections Camp, an innovative therapeutic social skill development program designed to meet the unique needs of youth with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). For six weeks each summer, youth ages 5-18 have fun while developing skills that lead to improved communication, better coping strategies, and lasting friendships. Since it began in 2000, Connections Camp has grown into a model program that incorporates structure, fun, and good teaching into successful social experiences for children. The program was presented at the National Autism Conference in 2007 and has expanded to a second location to serve another community. Here, the author discusses the program's goals and strategies and how it was created. The author also offers tips for starting similar program in a community.
