Geology Field Trips as Performance Evaluations
Bentley, Callan
Inquiry, v14 n1 p77-93 Spr 2009
One of the most important goals the author has for students in his introductory-level physical geology course is to give them the conceptual skills for solving geologic problems on their own. He wants students to leave his course as individuals who can use their knowledge of geologic processes and logic to figure out the extended geologic history of areas they live in or visit. Field trips therefore serve as a critical evaluation tool of his students' performance and overall learning. In this article, the author details his experience in using geology field trips to provide hands-on learning for his students and opportunities to assess student learning of key course concepts.
