Rhetoric of Race: Critical Pedagogy without Resistance
Corkery, Caleb
Teaching English in the Two-Year College, v36 n3 p 244-256Mar 2009
Like many compositions at majority schools, the author felt disturbed by his students' lack of racial awareness. During the 2007-08 academic year, the author tried a completely different approach to teaching composition that targeted white racial awareness. Identifying race as the course theme, he developed a curriculum that teaches rhetorical skills while exposing racial identities. This essay reports on the author's effective approach to teaching both rhetorical skills and white racial awareness by using historical moments when racial definitions were asserted and defended, allowing students to see their constructed racial identities through a nonthreatening rhetorical lens.
