Learning from Hong Kong Alumni: Lessons for School Leadership
Jabal, Eric
International Journal of Leadership in Education, v9 n1 p21-44 Jan 2006
A secondary analysis of interview and survey data was undertaken to explore what could be learnt about school leadership from international schools alumni. Using a framework of "values-led contingency" leadership, three features of effective principalship guide the analysis. The results highlight three salutary lessons for school leadership: (1) engage students' "multiple worlds"; (2) focus on students' person hood--not just their student-hood; and (3) pursue students' academic and social learning. Although the lessons derive from research with international schools alumni, they are shown to be relevant to educators and school leaders working within culturally rich, public and private K-12 school jurisdictions.
