Similarities and Links between Early Childhood Education and Informal Education in Youth Work for Adolescents
Muller, Burkhard
European Early Childhood Education Research Journal, v14 n2 p21-33 2006
This Paper argues that the learning opportunities needed by pre-school children and adolescents beyond school have much in common: both confront what the pioneer of youth work Josephine Brew (1943) named the key problem of the "whole man": combining "social fellowship, recreation and education in one organisation". For both ages questions of "Who am I?" and "What is the world?" are two sides of the same coin. Research findings on youth-centres in Germany are reported, using participant observation and focussed interviews with staff and visitors. They show how youth work, like early childhood education, needs attentive observation of children's involvement and well being in self chosen activities. These are the cues for strategies supporting development--more than didactics "bringing across" arguments and incentives for learning and civic virtues. The discussion also points out differences, referring to anthropologist Victor Turner's concept of "Communitas". It helps to explain, why getting public support for early childhood education seems easier than for informal education with adolescents. (Contains 3 footnotes.)
