Developing Leadership Skills
Kinney, Patti
Principal Leadership, v9 n4 p60-61 Dec 2008
Principals often think of professional development in terms of activities--attending a workshop, networking with colleagues at a conference, reading a professional article or book, and so on. Although these are all good things in and of themselves, genuine professional growth does not occur until knowledge and skills are put into practice at the building level. It is common to speak of professional development for teachers needing to be ongoing and job embedded, but principals often forget that their own personal professional development must also be so. "Breaking Ranks II" and "Breaking Ranks in the Middle" both recommend that principals develop a personal learning plan to address their own learning and professional development needs. To tailor this plan, reflection and feedback are key. NASSP has developed tools to help school leaders assess their own skills in 10 dimensions that are recognized elements of effective leadership. One of these is the NASSP Leadership Skills Assessment, an affordable Web-based tool that school leaders can complete at their own pace. This assessment diagnoses their capacity to practice good leadership in the context of their work setting and encourages the development of skills that contribute to success in leading schools.
