Illustrating Chromatography with Colorful Proteins
Lefebvre, Brian G.; Farrell, Stephanie; Dominiak, Richard S.
Chemical Engineering Education, v41 n4 p241-246 Fall 2007
Advances in biology are prompting new discoveries in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, medical technology, and chemical industries. This paper presents a detailed description of an anion exchange chromatography experiment using a pair of colorful proteins and summarizes the effect of operating parameters on protein separation. This experiment could be applied in three settings: core chemical engineering courses focused on separation processes, unit operation laboratory courses, and elective courses focused on biochemical engineering or bioseparations. (Contains 4 tables and 4 figures.)
