8 Things First-Year Students Fear about College
Shanley, Mary Kay; Johnston, Julia
Journal of College Admission, n201 p3-7 Fall 2008
There is this little secret college-bound and first-year college students outwardly deny: They are scared sick about going off to college. In the authors' interviews with 175 college students throughout the United States for "Survival Secrets of College Students" (Barron's, 2007) students talked--sometimes painfully--about what they wished they had known ahead of time and what they would have done differently. This article discusses 8 things first-year students fear about college. These are: (1) being smart enough; (2) liking roommates; (3) making friends; (4) missing home; (5) handling the party scene; (6) having sex; (7) covering costs; and (8) being safe.
