Drawing Connections: Developing an Integrated Dance Curriculum
Smith, Jennifer
Teaching Artist Journal, v5 n3 p199-204 Aug 2007
There are many talented and creative dance professionals working in academia today, and it can be stifling to an artist to feel that one must give students traditional class assignments to evaluate their progress. Dance is a creative endeavor, and all aspects of the curricula, even non-movement-based classwork, can and should reflect this fact. In this article, the author argues for a more holistic approach to the integration of academic subjects in college-level dance curricula. She addresses the steps in developing a holistic approach and illustrates how she accomplished this task at Knox College, a small liberal arts college located in Galesburg, Illinois. The author also includes curricular examples that will help to explicate her overarching philosophy of pedagogy.
