Where Are All the Brown People, Grandma?

In this new global society, understanding the voices of the diverse groups represented in schools is advantageous for all students. No one can deny that fair representation and positive images of all diverse populations in textbooks can only serve to develop students' awareness of diversity and reduce prejudice. The issue is how can school administrators, policy makers, and education officials, for the benefit of all students, make a realistic effort at incorporating a variety of subjects, with information and contribution reflective of the diverse backgrounds now represented in schools? The author contends the "key" is to provide texts in which young "brown people" can identify with characters who are doing things and resolving issues in cultural ways that allow them to create an identity and recognize it as "theirs" so there will be no need for them to ask, "where are we in this?" Narratives written with an underlying sense of the character's culture, realities and identity resonate with students who see themselves in these stories. Such narratives offer students opportunities to make associations and identify with circumstances and issues presented in the texts. As a result, children have a channel through which to view and reflect on their own lives.
