Pohan, Cathy A.; Mathison, Carla
Multicultural Perspectives, v9 n1 p19-25 Apr 2007
Television is responsible for more multicultural education than our public school system. The literature reveals that children's programming reflects society's dominant values and beliefs about a number of diversity-related topics such as race and gender. This article describes the findings of a unique study of preservice teachers' evaluations of children's television programming. Through a list of research-based suggestions, teacher educators are encouraged to prepare preservice teachers to draw upon televisions multicultural teaching power so that young people become more critically literate viewers of television.
